Show Do it yourself boom still on ; beats high costs The do-it-yourself boom is still on, and many homeowners and apartment apart-ment dwellers are attempting at-tempting to beat the high cost of labor and services by doing remodeling and fix-it jobs themselves. The Utah Safety Council offers the following suggestions to make fix-it work profitable and accident free. 1. Check yourself; do you have the proper skill and experience to complete the job and do it right? 2. Always check with your local building department . to see if a permit is required for the work you plan to do. 3. Do you have the right tools and are they in good, safe condition? 4. Follow instructions when using new equipment equip-ment and use household products and tools for the purpose they were designed for. 5. Provide adequate ventilation and keep work area uncluttered and free of spills. 6. Protect yourself against injury by wearing gloves, safety-toed shoes, an apron, protective mask or goggles or whatever is required to perform hazardous tasks safely. 7. When you re finished with your chore," store equipment properly and clean up immediately. Some do-it-yourself projects will make living safer for your family, such as the installation of locks on cabinets where guns, ammunition, household poisons and medicines are stored ; the construction of a handrail for basement stairways, and the use of safety glazing in sliding doors, tubs, and shower enclosures en-closures and storm doors. |
