Show Redmen break even; still plugging By LYNETTE SAWYER Record Reporter Five hundred may be a good batting average, but the Redmen of Cedar High School were hoping for a little better performance per-formance as they faced rival Dixie and then league-leading Spanish Fork in last week's action. ac-tion. The 4-1 loss to Spanish Fork was due largely to the fantastic pitching of S.F.'s Layne Hales. Hales gave up five hits, one run, and had nine key strikeouts in the seven-inning seven-inning game. The Dons scored twice in the third, once in the fourth, and once again in the seventh. Cedar's lone run came off a three-man effort in the fourth. Neil Bladen opened up with a single to cen-terfield. cen-terfield. David Carter was walked as Bladen stole second and then third base. Kelly Peterson then rapped a sacrifice fly into deep center . field to score Bladen. Trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh frame, Cedar was given no chance to rally as the three batters up were all fanned by Hales. Against Dixie, CHS fared much better, winning the game 11-3. David Carter, injured early in the season, was once again on the mound for Cedar High School. Carter got the win while logging nine strikeouts. Bryce Gubler came on in the sixth inning in relief and claimed five strikeouts of his own. Cedar scored first in the second inning as Kelly Peterson led off with a double to the left field wall. He was able to score as Shane Baggs sliced a single into centerfield. Kyle Kingsford was walked with one out as Baggs stole second. Gary Alger also drew a walk with two outs and the bases were loaded as Neil Bladen stepped to the plate, he hit a short single and all runners were safe; Baggs scored for the second Redmen run, David Carter then rapped a double to shallow left-field left-field . which scored-Kingsford, scored-Kingsford, Alger and Bladen for a total of five CHS runs. Cedar High added another two runs to their total in the third. Peterson led off with a base on balls and then went to second on a wild pitch. He crossed home plate as Bryce Gubler tripled to the outfield wall. Kyle Kingsford's single then scored Gubler. The fourth frame produced two more runs. David Carter homered with the bases bare. Kevin Garrett then . walked and scored on a long single by Kelly Peterson. Dixie finally scored in the fourth inning. The three runs proved to be Dixie's only tallies of the game. Another two-run inning was produced by Cedar in the sixth. Carter's double to the centerfield wall led things off, Kevin Garrett was then, thrown out at first but Carter was able to advance to third. Baggs got on with two away due to an error on the Dixie leftfielder, and Carter scored. Gubler then sliced a single up the hole to score Baggs. |
