Show Region Four girls' volleyball teams begin action today Region Four volleyball action opens this afternoon, with JV matches beginning at 4 p.m., followed fol-lowed by varsity matches at 5 p.m. The three Bountiful-area schools should all be in the hunt for state tournament berths. Action today finds Bountiful visiting Viewmont, a pair of teams who have already met three times in preseason; East visiting Woods Cross, and Davis traveling to Highland. The Darts are among the favorites in league, having all but one starter back from last year's fourth place state team. Here's a look at each of the three local teams: BOUNTIFUL If the Braves can develop some consistency, they might be tough to handle. Bountiful placed third in its own tournament earlier this month, and then came all the way back to finish second in the Clearfield tournament tourna-ment after losing all three opening-day opening-day matches. Bountiful is led by seniors Lori Stacey and Lisa Wilkinson, two of the top players around. Stacey and Wilkinson kept the Braves alive in the Clearfield tourney with powerful power-ful kills and efficient serves. Adding to the Brave attack are Kristine Doxey, Sue Stahle, Robyn Ludwig and Stephanie Reading. Also having strong performances per-formances in preseason for Bountiful Bounti-ful were Julia Thornley and Andy Harrison. Bountiful went to state a year ago, but lost several members of that team. VIEWMONT The Vikings captured Region Four last year, then won one of three matches at state, the first time that's happened in school history. Viewmont took second in the Bountiful tournament, tourna-ment, but lost to the Braves in a semifinal in the Clearfield tourney. Toni Bauman's troops include six veteran seniors: Becky Yeates, Jeni Squire, Trudi Larsen, Gayle Wintle, Sharwan Smith and Michelle Kent, the latter a transfer from Taylorsville. Add to that a fine bench in Tiffany Tif-fany Twitchell, Sherii Hansen and Kim Soleburg, plus some outstanding outstand-ing sophomores, and Viewmont could be tough. Like Bountiful, however, the Vikes need to develop de-velop more consistency than they showed, at times, in preseason. WOODS CROSS The big question at Woods Cross is when all the Wildcat starters can play together. Woods Cross enters league play after an "inconsistent" preseason. Still, Debbie Peel's squad is always tough and competitive. competi-tive. Jodie Warhurst and Marci Heaps, the famous Twin Towers, are back, though Heaps has not played much in preseason. Seniors Tonia Averett, Amy Mason and Jill Jensen will also start, and Peel has fine players in juniors Julie Eden, Jamie Parkin and Carolyn Knight. Sophomore Anjie Parkin will also see a lot of playing time. Following today's action, Tuesday Tues-day finds Highland traveling to East, Woods Cross visiting Bountiful Bounti-ful and Viewmont at Davis. Preseason Presea-son results would indicate that both East and Highland may be down this year, making the race for the four playoff berths (the fourth place team faces a preliminary playoff) an interesting one for Davis County teams. |
