Show I SOME SPECIAL ARRESTS I SOM SPECIL Ii I Zealous Officer Takes In Two I A Offcer for and i Fighting Boys Small Takes His Fees Also I One of the natural curiosities of our city I government is that every fellow that has ever figured as a special policeman I has or at least assumes the right to make arrests whether invested with something to show his authority or not This was most thoroughly illustrated in the Police Court where a fellow by the name of Simmons appeared before Justice Jus-tice Speirs this morning a special offi cer and complainant witness against two small boys for engaging in a fight I seems that Eddie Hanaak and Willie Cooper engaged in a boyish fight near W S Smiths fruit store on Second South street last evening over an apple and the flipping of some grape skins They fpping engaged in a tussle when the special policeman Simmons specal who was driving past with his father in a wagon undoubtedly saw a chance t eatn an honest penny without and the much effort on his part giving reins to his father jumped out of the wagon and ran over to where the boys were fighting In no gentle manner he grabbed the Hanaak boy by the collar and separated and choked him finally the boys The Hanaak boy told him to let go of him and called him some names saying that he had no right to interfere in-terfere with him and with that Simmons I said he was an officer and started to drag both boys to the City Hall The bystanders by-standers then interfered and nsked for his authority to make the arrest which he did not show and only protested that he had the right but that his papers were at home This morning Justice Speirs after hearing hear-ing the case was compelled by the statutes stat-utes to impose a fine of 5 each upon the boys Hanaak paid his fine but when our reporter left the City Hall the Cooper boy was still in custody and there I was some doubts in regard to his getting the money After the boys were convicted con-victed Simmons walked up and got his little fee as complainant witness and without n glance at the crying little boy pocketed it and went on his way rejoicing rejoic-ing no doubt well satisfied with his little job of bringing two small boys into the Police Court when he should have separated them and told them to mind their business and keep from fighting in the future The arrest seems to have been made through over zeal and as Simmons explains to punish the Hanaak boy for calling him names The outsiders and regular policemen were moved to compassion for the boys considering the circumstances j and it is to be hoped that Mayor Sharp will suspend the fine of the Cooper boy rather than let him remain in jail and also take away the authority if he has any of the special Simmons leaving such arrests to the regular force in the future |
