Show Davis spilcers finish season By KEITH DUNCAN KAYSVILLE As years go by, many track athletes will be thanking thank-ing the sport for what it taught them in hard work, dedication and a multitude mul-titude of other things. But perhaps if the sport itself could say thanks, it might be bowing bow-ing down to a couple from Davis High, both Kurt Black and Clay Singley. This Davis High pair concluded a brilliant year last weekend at the 4-A Utah State Track and Field Championships. Singley and Black brought a lot of excitement and pi-zaz pi-zaz to the spring sport both in the javelin and the long distance races. "They will be remembered by me for a long, long time," said Davis head coach John Flint. "Thy helped the sport as much as the sport helped them. I believe that in itself is quite an honor." Singley was in top form last Friday Fri-day as he tossed the javelin 203 feet and 1 . inches to win the state championship cham-pionship in that event. It was exactly ex-actly 23 feet further than the second place throw by teammate Dave Snowball (180-11). "I just felt like this meet was all mine," said Singley, "It was great to get off such a good throw at the state meet." The other Davis hero was Black who certainly outclassed the rest of the state in the 3200 meters, with no one coming close to beating him all year long. Black also was in tiptop tip-top form on Friday as he beat out Woods Cross Matt Roat 9:30.82 to 9:33.50. Black was also the 4-A cross country champion in the fall. Singley and Black also participated partici-pated in other events. Black lost on Saturday to Roat in the 1600 meters and Singley just barely missed out on finishing among the top six in the pole vault competition. These efforts and many more helped pace Davis High to a sixth place finish among the 4-A teams this year. Davis gathered in 42 points to finish just one point out of fifth place. Other outstanding state performances perform-ances included Snowball's second in the javelin and his narrowly missing mis-sing out placing in the pole vault as well. Brian Jeffers concluded a great senior year at Davis by taking fifth in the shot put (49-5 Vi). The Darts' only other points came in the medley relay where they finished fourth. |
