Show News Gs Views Highlights of news events and personal opinions of people and happenings in .-sv Davis County. Q I By GARY R. BLODGETT news editor I have to go along with the vast majority of experts ex-perts -- and those who think they are experts -- of the best method of reducing the water level of the Great Salt Lake. Gov. Norman Bangerter holds steadfast that pumping the existing water of the Great Salt Lake into the Western Desert is the "best of the worst" plans under the circumstances -- the circumstances being that the lake level is the highest in modern day history -- which goes back to when the Mormon Pioneers settled Salt Lake Valley. But I'm still not convinced that pumping is the answer -- not since I spent the weekend with my sister in southern Idaho. She lives on the shore of the mighty Bear River. And just looking at that "humongus" waterflow makes you shake your head in disbelief. But as the governor and others have repeatedly stated, "something must be done before it's too late. I hope they are right and it's not too late. How many of you saw the TV news, and repeated repe-ated reruns of the historical event, "Hands Across America?" Remember the little girl who started the human chain in New York City? Did you know that the little 6-year-old who lives with her mother and two sisters in a welfare hotel is now a movie star well almost. Earlier this month she received a modeling contract and has already auditioned for TV commercials. She even looked like she knew what she was doing when the TV cameras panned on her during the filming of "Hands Across America." Personally, I've been more impressed with the local marches and runs for fund-raising. It was impressive to see the number of youngsters youngs-ters and the enthusiasm they showed -- last Thursday as they gathered on the steps of the Utah Capitol Building to hear brief talks of encouragement encourage-ment before starting the "Red Ribbon March." This rnarch was for support against drug and alcohol abuse among teenagers. Our First Lady Colleen Bangerter sounded more like a high school cheerleader than the governor's distinguished wife as she yelled encouragement to the 200 or so youths who had gathered. Lt. Gov. Val Oveson; BYU football stars Mike Young and Jason Buck; and University of Utah Football Coach Jim Fassel also gave excellent remarks and urged the youth to "say No to drugs and alcohol." Then there were the law enforcement agencies throughout Utah -- including all those departments in Davis County -- that ran from one end of the state to the other for the benefit of the Utah Special Olympics. More than 20 mentally retarded youngsters from the Monte Vista School in Farmington gathered at Page's Lane and Main Street to run side-by-side with Bountiful's eight police officers along Main Street, Bountiful. Bountiful Police Chief Larry D. Higgins asked for the youngsters to participate locally. A half-dozen or so other communities statewide did the same thing. And it was a beautiful sight to see. |
