Show Commissioner overpaid? Our Davis County Commissioner Harry Gerlach's attempt to explain his approximately 60 percent salary increase since taking tak-ing office is a bit much for one to accept and find justification for. I am willing to grant he works hard and I know others in the top echelon of elected officials and the government bureaucracy receive as high or higher salary. That is our problem! Elected officials and their top bureaucrats have increased their salaries beyond our ability to pay. People I know are oppressively overtaxed, so where does Mr. Gerlach hope to get more and more money for ever increasing salaries? Certainly the near absence of inflation over the past several years does not justify excessive if any salary increases. The way our elected officials and their bureaucracies manage our water resources, our highways and our educational system is far from superior. In fact often their management is mediocre or worse and certainly not worthy of ever increasing salaries. I suspect most workers in the state would be happy to receive a salary half as much as Mr. Gerlach's present salary. DeMonte Washburn. |
