Show SCD Selects Top Speech Maker; Hears Area Worker The Uintah Basin Soil Conservation Con-servation District met last Friday Fri-day night at the Frontier Grill in a dinner meeting to hear the finalists in a speech contest sponsored by the local District. The contest was open to all farmers that cooperate with the Soil Conservation District. The two participants were Lorin Merkley, of Vernal, and Tom Rowley of Roosevelt. Both spoke on the subject: "Democracy at Work in My Soil Conservation District." Mr. Rowley was chosen as the winner of the District and will now compete on a state basis. Ralph Felker, SCS Area Conservationist working out of Provo was a guest speaker and gave a report on the program that Secretary Benson has given giv-en to the department. Mr. Felker said. "There may be some changes and definately some adjustments made, but we are going - to try and make it work. It will effect the districts very little, if any, he continued. One of the reasons for reorganizing re-organizing the service, he said, was to get the various agencies working closer together with one another and with the State colleges. Mr. Felker voiced the opinion that the over-all personnel would not be cut down but that some would quit in Albuquerque and the offices in the state offices would hire more. This being so because of more of the paper work being done in the state offices instead of going through the office in Albuquerque. Albuquer-que. Mr. Golden Kilburn, State Extension Conservationist, from Logan was the concluding speaker speak-er and he said, The aim of the SCD is to use every acre of land to its best capabilities. "Grass," he continued, "is the most important thing in the world - save man. (corn, wheat, oats, etc. are all considered grass) and with our best land going down the river we have got to educate the farmers on how to save this precious top soil. "By 1970, if our soil erosion continues, we will be producing just enough food for our own population," Mr. Killburn said. He lauded the Soil Conservation Conservat-ion District men, who give of their time and talents freely to help the farmer, for the work they are doing teaching the farmers how to save our land and keep it producing for future generations. Without the help of the PMA, FHA, SCS and the County Agent Ag-ent the SCD couldn't function to its full capabilities. In concluding he said that the SCD has a whale of a job to' do and encouraged them to do the job as best they could. The meeting was under the direction of Mr. Harold Dudley, Chairman of the Uintah Basin Soil Conservation District Board, and was attended by other board members and guests. |
