The brothers, the third generation gener-ation of jewelers, were born and raised in a small town in northern north-ern Minnesota. The boys grew up in the atmosphere of a typical typi-cal small town jewelry store and spent their spare hours tinkering tinker-ing with the mechanics of clocks of all descriptions. As they became be-came older, they became acquainted ac-quainted with manufacturing and repairing of clocks, watches, watch-es, and exquisite pieces of jewel-ery. jewel-ery. They became apprentices under the direction of their father and studied the construction construc-tion and repairing of fine time pieces. Time passed, the boys grew, and the depression came about the time the oldest boy had completed com-pleted high school and was considering con-sidering his life time vocation. It was decided that money could be raised to pay the boy's tuition if he was able to work for his board and room. He was able to find work washing dishes, waiting tables, and doing do-ing odd jobs. Not only studying for his trade, but . learning the value of a dollar. The arrangement arrange-ment proved very successful and he managed to graduate from what was considered the finest watchmaking school in the world. The depression continued and the other brothers were able to, follow the first brother's example, ex-ample, and all managed an education ed-ucation in their favored vocation, voca-tion, and to follow in their father's foot steps. The boys had heard the glowing reports of opportunity in the West, and as they graduated grad-uated they struck out for themselves them-selves with the desire to work in a western city. Howard went to South Dakota, Bob to Utah, and Dick found work in Denver. Den-ver. After further training, Howard How-ard heard of a small town in Colorado that had a jewelry store available for a very small down payment. Traveling farther farth-er west, he inspected the store and made arrangements to buy. As time passed, the younger brothers again followed his example. ex-ample. Each carefully selecting a community they could have pride in and one in which they wanted to raise their families. Fortune again favored the brothers, for they found for each, the town they most desired de-sired where they settled down and proceded to raise their families, fam-ilies, participate in local affairs, and enjoy the many advantages the towns had to offer. Their stores prospered through combined efforts, ideas and more especially the goodness good-ness and cooperation of their neighbors. Their . sons and daughters grew up, went to school, and their families learned learn-ed to love the communities in which they had cast their lot. The brothers felt a great gratitude to the towns which they selected and wished . in some way, to repay the people for the friendship and trust that had been bestowed upon them. While traveling in an eastern city, one of the brothers was deeply moved by the beautiful chimes ringing out from a famous fam-ous Cathedral. The music seemed seem-ed to display his feeling of gratitude to his neighbors and to be a symbol of the security of his town. If only our towns could enjoy the beautiful music of the Westminster West-minster Chimes, but of course the price was absurd. He carried car-ried home his thoughts and described des-cribed the chimes and his feelings feel-ings to' his brothers. They all agreed it would be the appropriate appro-priate gift if only the price of the chimes could be built within with-in their means. So they set out to materialize their dream through considerable trial and error. Now the chimes are installed in their respective communities and a dream has come true. When they ring out they remind re-mind each brother of his gratitude grati-tude to his fellow man, and to the community may they always be a symbol of four brothers' appreciation. |
