Show Six Cougars Are Latest Take Of Expert Hunter Six mountain lions were taken from the Duchesne area this week by employees of the U. b. Fish and Wildlife Service. George Nay, of Salina. accompanied accom-panied by Walter Nelson and Dave Thomas, were successful with a short hunt in Lake Canyon Can-yon where they tracked a female fe-male cat and her three one-year-old cubs. Their tracks wre picked up at the remains of a deer carcass and trailed through the freshly fallen snow Two veteran dogs belonging to Mr. Nay led the chase. Two other full-grown cougars were taken this week before the snow melted melt-ed in this area. Counting these six lions, 1 have been taken in the Duchesne Du-chesne and Price area by Mr Nay this winter. This totals 138 cougars that Mr. Nay has killed. Mr. Nelson reports that the cougars inflicted much damage to sheep herds in the Hanna area, owners having reported kills of more than 150. He states that it is estimated that a female lion and her family fam-ily will kill and devour a deer on the average of one every three days, or about 104 per year per cat family. A single mountain lion will devour at least 50 deer per year, according to best estimates available. This being the case, the cougars in this area this year are probably devouring more than 1000 of the deer, which would be a delectable de-lectable dish for many a family's fam-ily's dinner table next fall, Mr. Nelson remarked. |
