Weekly Publishers Select New Officers M Ansied Convention " Winners Were Announced In Better Newspaper Contest At Final Session; Standard And Express Awarded Top Citations Max Warner, publisher of the Payson Chronicle, was advanced from vice-president to the office of president of the Utah State Press Association at the annual convention held last weekend in Salt Lake City. He succeeds Roy Gibson, of the Nephi Times-News' who served the past year. Other newly elected officers and directors include Russell Innes, Lehi Free Press, vice-presidnt and William Wallis, Vernal Express was chosen secretary. Mr. Innes served in 1955 as secretary. New board members who were elected for two-year terms, include Steve-Williams, Steve-Williams, Milford News'; J. Parr Godfrey, Midvale Sentinel; William Stahle, Jr., Roy, Utah, and Cliff Memmott, Roosevelt Standard -Uintah Basin Record. Hold-over director is Norman Fullenbach, Richfield Reaper. The retiring president, Mr. Gibson, remains as a member of the board for this year. Fete Suppliers During the two-day convention that started with an open house for newsaper suppliers on Friday evening, publishers' attending participated par-ticipated in various panels involving invol-ving newspaper procfuction. Ernest Linford, chief editorial writer for the Salt Lake Tribune, who addressed add-ressed the group at the Saturday night president's dinner, and Don Hardy of Canyon City, Colo., president of the' National Editorial Association, were the main speakers speak-ers on the program. Awards Presented The closing session of the convention con-vention was the' award dinner at which time winners in the annual' "Better Newspaper" contest, sponsored spon-sored by USP, and special contests directed' during the year by the three senior colleges' and universities, univer-sities, were announced. General Excellence in the three groups of newspapers, which was based on circulation, was won by the Milford News in Group 1, (under 750 circulation); Spanish Fork Press, Group 2, (750 to 1250), and the Vernal Express was1 the winner in group in Group 3, (over 1250),. Last year (1954) papers were divided into two groups, above and below 1000 circulation. Winners were the Uintah Basin (Continued on Back Page) WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS. . . Is Front Page Winner The Roosevelt Standard was especially es-pecially honored when it was presented pre-sented a plaque as the winner in the "Harrison R. Merrill Front Page Contest," sponsored annually by the Journalism Department of the Brigham University. The Ephraim Enterprise was cit ed by the Utah State Agricultural College for Community Leadership and was presented a plaque. The Standard won this award in 1952. The Lehi Free Press gained the "Boner of The Year" Oscar, and the Box Elder News received the top "Photo of The Year" award, presented by the University of Utah. Runners-up Listed Runners-up in the general excellence excel-lence contest in group 1 were the Eureka Reporter, second;. Manti Messenger, third; Ephraim Enterprise Enter-prise and' Garfield Leader, honorable honor-able mention. In group two, the Lehi Free Press placed second and the Kays-ville Kays-ville Reflex third. Honorable mention men-tion went to the Wasatch Wave, Payson Chronicle and the Nephi Times-News. Second place in group three went to the' Springville Herald and third to the Roosevelt Standard. Stan-dard. The Iron County Record, Box Elder News and Richfield Reaper won honorable mention.
