Show Indian Voufh (ills Self After Wounding Officer Wednesday Rites Held At Myton; Lawman Recovers While funeral services were being be-ing conducted at the Myton Presbyterian Pres-byterian church in Myton for George W. Conetah, 19, Myton City Marshall Elbert Chandler was recovering from gunshot wounds inflicted by the Indian youth Saturday Sat-urday night near Myton. Rev. Howard Allen of the Whiterocks Episcopal mission conducted the services for Conetah. The Indian youth, after shooting shoot-ing the marshall with a .22 caliber rifle through the thigh, the bullet ranging upward lodging in the' pelvis region, eluded a posse of lawmen and escaped to the home of his mother, where he turned the gun on himself.- He' died a short time later on the way to the Roosevelt LDS Hospital. Driver's License Revoked Marshall Chandler said he had received a call at Myton that the Indian youth, whose driver's li-. cense had been revoked, had taken a car belonging to Paul Lonebear. He said he saw Conetah leave the Myton pool hall about 9 p.m. Saturday and followed him. He reported that about five miles from Myton the youth (Continued on Paije 2) INDIAN YOUTH KILLS SELF. . . The marshall said he stopped and got out of his car, Intending to take the keys from the other car and return them to the owner. As he got out, he said his assailant as-sailant opened fire, wounding him in the leg. He said he fired back i but could not see The youth in the dark. Then he got in his car and drove about a quarter of a mile to Orval Gillen's home. Mr. Gillen rushed him to Roosevelt Hospital. Called Roosevelt Police Later, Mrs, Gillen called Roosevelt Roose-velt police and told them that the Conetah youth was in her yard and threatening to enter the home. Roosevelt City Marshal Roe McDonald Mc-Donald immediately notified the Utah State Highway Patrol and a posse of peace officers surrounded the area. Assisting were Herb Snyder, Uintah County sheriff;, Lorin Stevenson, Stev-enson, Duchesne County sheriff; Bob Summers, of the Indian police'; po-lice'; Ray' Helm, Howard Powell and Val Palmer of the Highway Patrol. . ' At one time, Officers Helm and Gillen saw Conetah climbing through a fence and exchanged shots with him. The youth escaped and went to his mother's home which was nearby where he shot himself, officers said. Officers found him on the living room floor with a bullet wound in his chest. He died enroute to the hospital. Born at Fort Duchesne Conetah was born at Ft. Duchesne Du-chesne Feb. 2, 1937, to Edward and Mary Alice Savage Conetah, He' is survived' by his parents, Myton; a sister, Mrs. Helen White, Shiprock, N. M.; two brothers, Paul and Fred, of Myton. Burial was in the Myton cemetery under the direction direc-tion of the Olpin Mortuary of Roosevelt. Mr. Chandler's condition was reported re-ported to be good at the Roosevelt Roose-velt LDS Hospital this morning. |
