Show Cfcukar Partridges ay Become Game Of Future For Utah Sportsmen In order to determine whether the chukar partridge has possibilities pos-sibilities as a game bird in Utah, the Fish and Game department has initiated a two-fold project. The first part of this project consisted of a visit by departmental depart-mental personnel to Nevada to examine ranges where chukar partridge were thriving. An inspection in-spection o f the southwestern part of Utah was then made to find areas comparable to those areas in Nevada. After the selection se-lection of the sites, a program was initiated for the acquisition of chukars or chukar eggs. Initially the plan called for the purchase or acquisition through the trading for wild chukars. This, however, was found to bo impossible since birds were available and would not likely be available for some years to come. The second alternative al-ternative was to purchase the egg's and rear and condition the birds prior to release. . Each week a shipment of eggs arrives at the farm where thel are hatched. When they reach the proper size and age, they will be subjected to a conditioning con-ditioning program in the locality local-ity where release is anticipated. The entire program is being carefully studied under the upland up-land game bird study project, and the sportsmen of Utah should soon know .whether or not they may look forward to hunting chukar partridge. |
