Show Hope flints For Designating 49 As Super Highway Mayor Chester Lyman of , Duchesne Du-chesne lead a delegation of public officials and other citizens from Duchesne and the county at large last week as they met with state political, leaders seeking support for Highway 40 as a designation on the federal highway system. Other communities along 40 were in attendance at the meeting with the state road commission, governor. gover-nor. Salt Lake City mayor and commission. In the Duchesne delegation were mayor Lyman, Ray Horrocks, Carl Wilkerson, James Hatch, B. A. Jacoby. Ed Lundgren, John Gilbert and Don Bench. All three members of the board of county commission, commis-sion, Floyd Lamb, Roosevelt, Lyle Young, Mt. Emmons and Elmer Moon, Duchesne were numbered with the delegation. In discussing the great highway program that will see the west coast linked with the eastern seaboard, sea-board, Mayor Lyman, was strong (Continued on Back Page) k HOPE FOR HIGHWAY 40 (Continued From Page 1) in his hope that all of the Uintah Basin and other parts of the west, that are situated along highway 40 would get on the band wagon and boost for the shortest route from Denver to Salt Lake City. Reference was made by the mayor to a summary that was prepared pre-pared and presented at the meeting meet-ing by the Utah Highway 40 association. as-sociation. Striking figures were quoted which showed 27,000,000 additional, motor vehicles were put into use over a ten year period and are traveling our highway's. . The report gave some pertinent pertin-ent facts to attempt to prove that Highway 40 is the most logical and consistent route from Denver to Salt Lake City. Four brief statements were cited as follows: 1. Highway 40 is the shortest direct route between Denver and Salt Lake. 2. It will, because of its geographical geo-graphical location, best connect by route the metropolitan areas, cities, and industrial areas located in the intermountain west to serve national defense. 3. Will serve the great Uintah Basin, which has no other transportation trans-portation system other than high-way. high-way. 4. Is the best route from an engineering standpoint. The report proves that highway high-way 40 is 39 miles shorter than No. 50-6 which is being pushed by communities along that route. Encouragement Comes Endorsement of Highway 40 by Mayor Adiel Stewart of Salt Lake City and Commissioner Lamont B. Gunderson of Salt Lake county, has added new life and hope to the association and the communities communi-ties along 40. In a public statement state-ment to the daily press last Fri. the two Salt Lake, political leaders more or less approved the report Mayor Lyman quoted from as. he returned from the meeting. An organized plea is being made to other communities along the route to join in the fight to get Highway 40 designated. To date neither the Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce or the city officials have committed themselves one way or another. It is expected they will fall in line and work with other interests |
