Show Belated Naval Awards Conferred Upon Local Flyer Permanent citations for the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal have been received by Joseph W. Mower, of Roosevelt, Roose-velt, it is announced in a recent dispatch from the U, S. Navy. Simultaneous with the awarding of the citations by Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, acting act-ing for the President, gold stars in lieu of the second, third, fourth and fifth Air Medals, were also bestowed upon Mower, Joe Mower, a lieutenant (jg) in the Naval Reserve, earned the awards while serving with Composite Com-posite Squadron 91, attached to the USS Makin Island, in action against the Japanese in the Ryukyu Islands, However, citations cita-tions during the war were temporary tem-porary or incomplete for security reasons, and only recently were the permanent citations received by Mower. Mower Was awarded the Distinguished Dis-tinguished Flying Cross after completing his 20th mission, and the Air Medal after his fifth. Both were earned during the period, March 26 to May 23, 1945. The Distinguished Flying Cross was awarded, "For heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight against enemy-Japanese enemy-Japanese forces." Mower's citation cita-tion for the Air Medal and five gold stars reads: "For meritorious meritor-ious achievement in aerial flight in action against enemy Japanese Jap-anese forces." Mower, one of the organizers of the Roosevelt Flying Service, is currently engaged as flight instructor in-structor and pilot of that organization. |
