Show acre, and may be broadcast among the plants. The important thing is to be sure the bait gets around the crown of the plants so that it will be shaded and keep moist. The weevil wee-vil will not take it after it has dried out. Remember These Points: 1. Watch carefully for the emergence emer-gence of the beetles and make application ap-plication of bait within two weeks after the first beetles are observed. 2. Keep careful watch of the bait If it dries out and there are still live beetles in the patch, make a second application following the first by 15 to 20 days. 3. Apply bait to strawberry, raspberry, rasp-berry, and dewberry patches that are infested or near infested patches. patch-es. 4. There seems to be another species spe-cies of the root weevil in some patches. patch-es. The adults were found this year on the 26th of May. Watch for these early beetles. Remember they will be depositing eggs within two weeks after they emerge. 5. In case you should not care to prepare your own bait, the chemical chemi-cal bait "Go-West" may be purchased pur-chased at the spray chemicals companies. Strawberry Root Weevils and Their Control The strawberry root-weevil have done considerable damage in strawberry straw-berry and raspberry patches last summer and this spring. If they are not checked this year, serious damage to the berry crop will be noted next spring. The weevil is not especially hard to control if care is taken in making mak-ing application of poison bait. The application of the bait should be made about two weeks after the first beetles appear, for after the beetles have been out that long they soon start to deposit eggs. The bait is not an effective control after eggs have been deposited. Only by preventing pre-venting the beetles from laying eggs can an effective control be had. The following baits are recommended recom-mended by the Oregon Experiment Station and should give good control con-trol here: 1. 95 lb finely ground dried apples. 5 lb calcium arsenate. The apple should be moist enough to take a. good covering of the calcium cal-cium arsenate. Simply mix the apple ap-ple and the poison until all the apple ap-ple has received a. thorough coating. 2. Bran 50 lb. Sugar 10 lb. Poison 2 1 1- lb. (calcium arsenate) ar-senate) Water 5 gal. Disolve sugar in water, mix calcium cal-cium arsenate and bran thor-. oughly, add solution of sugar and water slowly and continue mixing until the bran and arsenate ar-senate is wetted uniformally. Either of these baits should be applied ap-plied at the rate of 75 to 100 lb per |
