The South Pacif ic: A dream of islands airport, a number of duty-free shops and some excellent resort hotels. There are relaxing white sand beaches, warm sunny days, palm trees shady and green, swaying to the rhythm of a gentle island breeze. There's lively entertainment including the Fijian meke, with traditional dancing and singing. Firewalking and spear dancing. You will find every type of water sport is catered for, from the excitement of big game fishing, to water skiing and snorkeling. On land, there are superb tennis courts, golf courses and inland valleys to explore. Fiji offers great food, from the traditional feast, called a magiti, to Chinese, Indian and European cuisine. French Polynesia Tahiti The mere mention of Tahiti can bring a look of longing, for Tahiti is the jewelled legend of the South Seas; sunny, excapist, utterly without care. Tahiti is the big island, the starting place, and only one of many islands belonging to the French Polynesian chain. Faaa International Airport is here, as are the largest hotels and the widest range of amenities. This is 'metropolitan' Polynesia, with the capital city of Papeete. Papeete is delightfully provincial, with lots of color, action and charisma. The city is designed for leisurely wandering, for enjoying the mixture of Polynesian, French and Chinese cultures, for strolling along a waterfront boulevard, sipping coffee in a sidewalk cafe, watching the activity at the municipal market, visiting the museum and the art galleries. Papeete also boasts some excellent French restaurants, energetic discotheques and good shopping. Moorea Only ten minutes flying time from Papeete, Moorea is a tranquil, small island, with two lovely bays. You can see Moorea from Tahiti the island looms up in a jagged silhouette, rugged and romantic. Pure skies, swaying palm trees, white sandy beaches, warm blue water...if you've ever dreamed about a South Pacific island of your own, this may be the one. Tranquility is the best description of leisurely time spent on Moorea. Bora Bora An escapist's paradise, Bora Bora is dominated by two volcanic peaks and ringed by a reef that encircles one of the Pacific's loveliest lagoons. An unpaved 17-mile road encircles the island, but most activity naturally takes to the water: snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, sailing, paddling outrigger canoes, water skiing, swimming from white sandy beaches. On land, you can join excursions into the mountains and see the ruins of ancient Polynesian altar sites called maraes. Fiji Nadi Lying in warm Pacific waters under tropical sunshine, the 300 islands that make up Fiji provide everything you need for a pleasurable vacation. Viti Levu is the large, mountainous main island. On the west coast of Viti Levu is Nadi, the gateway to Fiji, with the country's international Copy and photographs courtesy of etset Tours and Summit International Travel. |
