Show WHnaitt's Looking for something different to do this weekend? Here are a few suggestions, compiled by Park Record entertainment critic Rick Brough. Unless otherwise noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake City. MOVIES The Hitchcock film series at the Salt Lake City Library continues with "Spellbound." In this 1945 thriller, Ingrid Bergman stars as a psychiatrist trying to discover the hidden traumas of Gregory Peck, who may or may not be a murderer! Salvador Dali supplied the imagery for the dream sequences. The film plays on Friday, April 26, at 2 p.m. (for 25 cents) and 7 p.m. (for 50 cents). The library is at 209 East 500 South. At the Blue Mouse: "The Go Masters" shows a Chinese student and his Japanese mentor torn by conflicts of the '30s and '40s; "A Sunday in the Country" is Bertrand Tavernier's acclaimed drama of the ordinary about a family reunion; "Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" stars Sandy Dennis, Cher and Karen Black in a reunion with dramatic revelations and a freaky twist. The Mouse is at 260 East 100 South. The Utah Media Center concludes its Brando and Beats series. In "One-Eyed Jacks" Brando plays an outlaw seeking revenge on his former comrade-turned-sheriff (Karl Maiden). Brando also directed. The film plays on April 26 (7:30 p.m.), 27 (7:30 p.m.) and 2? (5 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.). "Poetry in Motion" is a film record of readings from 24 writers, performers and poets, including Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs. It plays on April 26 at 10 p.m., April 27 at 5:30 and 10 p.m. and April 28 at 7:30 p.m. The films are shown in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Art Center, at 20 South West Temple. MUSIC The Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus appears Saturday at the Tabernacle at 8 p.m. Three bands are scheduled for the Utah State Fairgrounds. Two heavy-metal bands, Loudness and Keel, will appear at the Fairgrounds Coliseum on April 26. The Blasters, known for their release "Hard Line," will play April 29 at the Fairgrounds Horticulture Building. The Zephyr Club, at 301 South West Temple, presents A.C. Reed on April 25-27, Ghanian drummer Obo Addy on April 28, with his sextet Kukrudu, and Spanky and the Wankers on April 30. The Mahlis-McQueen Machine plays April.29 at D.B. Cooper's (19 East Second South ) from 8 : 30 to 12 : 30 p.m. THEATRE Park City Performances presents Neil Simon's "Come Blow Your Horn" on April 25-27 at the Egyptian Theatre on Park City's . Chekhov's "The Three Sisters" is presented at the Babcock Theatre (downstairs from Pioneer Memorial) at the U. of U., April 25-27 and May 1-4 at 8 p.m. A May 4 matinee is at 2 p.m. The musical "Porter" stars Craig Stephenson as Orrin Porter Rockwell on April 25, 8 p.m., at the U. of U.'s Kingsbury Hall and April 27 at the Highland High Auditorium (for a 2 p.m. matinee and 8 p.m. evening show). Tickets are $5-8 available at Kingsbury, ZCMI, Salt Palace, Special Events Center and Datatix outlets. The New Shakespeare Players present Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," set in 1922, Friday-Sunday through May 12 at 8 p.m. It takes place at the Courage Theatre (second floor, Converse Hall) at Westminster College 1840 South 1300 East. ETCETERA -The Kimball Art Center in Park City hosts photographer Howard T. Rainer on the upper floor and painter Jeanne L. Clarke in the Lower Gallery. The exhibits run to May 2. "Journey with Digistar: From the Atom to the Edge of the Universe" plays on Monday-Friday (4:30 and 7 p.m.) Saturday (11 a.m., 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.) and Sunday ( 2 and 4 : 30 p. m. ) They are followed by the award-winning commercials, The Clios, on Monday-Friday (7:45 p.m.) Saturday (2:45, 5:15 and 7:45 p.m.) and Sunday (2:45and5:15p.m.) . Laserium presents "The Beatles: The Music That Changed the World" on Thursday-Saturday at 9 p.m. Also, "Laserock Platinum" presents the laser's greatest rock hits in a 10:15 p.m. show on Friday . and Saturday. . The Hansen presents Saturday star shows for children, including "Space Speak and Children's Space Library" (10:30 a.m.), "Zoom a Little Zoom" at 11 a.m. and "Adventures Along the Spectrum" at 2 p.m. -A major figure of contemporary art is saluted in "Henry Moore: The Reclining Figure" at the U. of U. Utah Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibit, featuring photos, drawings and sketches of Moore s sculptures, runs through May 12. Admission is $2 or 50 cents for studentsseniors. |
