Spring Run Off features photo finish - j !r v -V ' ' ' ' i '. - ' ' , , W il I j J ; " ' ' Mi"' ''""'WHlHIIMIHIllli' by Dave Adler John Allsen and Fred Woody staged a photo finish and Madonna Harris turned in a strong performance per-formance Saturday to highlight the Prospector Athletic Club's four-mile Spring Run Off. Allsen and Woody went nose-to-nose from start to finish, up and down hilly terrain under cold and cloudy skies. And when the four-mile event had ended, Allsen had won by a mere half a second. Allsen's time of 22:33 represented the best overall time among the 40 runners who braved the inclement weather, and it earned him the title in the Men's Class D (ages 20-24) category. But Woody didn't walk away empty-handed; his time of 22:33.5 was easily good enough to capture the crown in the Men's Class E (ages 25-29) competition. On the women's side, 28-year-old Madonna Harris, fresh from her bicycling victory a week ago in the Moab Stage Race, turned in the ninth best overall time of the day and the best clocking among the ladies to win the Women's Class N (ages 25-29) division. The race course began at Wolfe's in the Holiday Village Mall, went up toward the Park City Ski Area, along the Park City Golf Course, down Thaynes Canyon Drive into Park Meadows, and past the Dairy Queen to the Prospector Athletic Club. . "It was a good course for an early spring run," said Jeannine Siemon, manager of the Prospector Athletic Club. "It would have been nice to have had more runners," but the weather probably kept a lot of people away." , i " . ' ; yV . ; ' i But the runners who did compete demonstrated, surprising strength and speed for so early in the season. In the Men's Class B (ages 13-16) competition, Eric Fritz captured the title with a time of 24:44, the fourth fastest overall time of the day. Jim Willoughby was second in 31 :19 and Chris Fellows third in 42 :05. Runnerup to John Allsen in the Men's D Class race was Steve Kammer who finished in 26:21. Frank Deshon was third with a clocking of 26:40. Behind Fred Woody, winner of the Men's Class E event, was Randy Hartman, whose time of 23 :46 was the third fastest time in the race. Bob Beasly was third, and his time of 25:13 was fifth overall. In the Men's Class F (ages 30-34) competition, Tom Johnston claimed the win with a time of 25:30, sixth best among the field. Runnerup was Jack Schirman, clocked at 29:45. Mark Roark was third in 30:56. In the Men's Class G (ages 35-39) category, Richard Beaufait was the winner with a time of 26:05. Larry McClellan was second in 29:13 and Bill Ligety third in 34:08. There were no entries in the Men's A, C, H and I classes. In the ladies' competition, Jeanne Brennan claimed first place in the Women's Class L (ages 17-19) competition with a time of 38 :50. She was the lone entrant in that class. . Roxanne Toly ran the course in a time of 28:41 to win the Women's Class M (ages 20-24) division. Nola Anderton was second in 30:22 and Martha Koerner third in 36:45. Debra Pack headed a two-person field in the Women's Class 0(ages 30-34 ) category with a winning time of 26:37. Mary Aiken was second with a time of 40:45. And Diane Zimney walked away with the crown in the Women's Q (ages 40-49) division with a time of 36:05. She was the lone runner in the category. ' ; . .
