Show Buses to run again June 1 by Christopher Smart If you are reading this while you wait at the bus stop, you may be waiting a long time, at least until June 1. Park City bus service has been suspended since April 21 and will not run during the month of May. According to Park City Director of Transportation Kae Draper, the bus system historically follows the winter schedule of the Park City Ski Area. However, in the past, summer service has been made available, and last May the buses ran on a limited basis. But Draper said Transportation Transporta-tion Department figures show only four people an hour rode city buses in May 1984. In response to a petition signed by residents and local businessmen, the bus system maintained service in October 1984, which traditionally has been a non-service month. Whether or not Park City buses will run in October this year remains to be seen. During the Capital Improvements Budgetary process, the Transportation Transporta-tion Department was allocated $67,000 for 1985 to lease two four-wheel drive buses and one trolley. The buses will serve Deer Valley's Silver Lake area and the trolley will operate on and around Main Street. Draper has requested an additional addi-tional $60,000 annually to provide benefits for eight more full-time employees. That funding will be discussed when the city considers its annual operating . budget next month. Currently many transporta tion employees work for the city year-round, but do not enjoy the benefits given to other city employees. em-ployees. s Draper said the additional funds would bring to 10 the number of full-time employees under her direction. Summer bus service can be offered with 10 drivers, she said. But winter service requires 30 drivers. An additional $200,000 for transportation trans-portation capital expenditures may become available to Park City in October, Draper said. These Section 18 funds are federal dollars funneled through state programs. The money is allocated on an 8020 matching basis in which municipalities are: required to come up with 20 percent. |
