Show Eakin sets the pace for P.C. track team i by Dave Adler Two Park City High School track athletes turned in stellar performances, per-formances, but they weren't enough to turn the tide against a deeper and more experienced track team from Union that overwhelmed the Miners Wednesday, April 17 at Union. Freshman Ena Eakin earned victories in three events and sophomore Bruce Buckner broke the school's shot put record, but their achievements couldn't match the overall team strength featured by Union. In the final tally, the Union girls racked up 99 points to 69 for Park City and nine for South Summit. On the boy's side, Union scored 132 points, Park City 39 and South Summit 18. "Union has a very good team," said Miner coach Bill Kahn. "They are deep and very experienced." In what is becoming a sweet habit, Ena Eakin again won the . mile, half-mile and two-mile events. "She usually wins those events," said Kahn. "She was very impressive." Ena's outstanding performance shadowed the fine afternoon that teammate Abbey Peterson enjoyed. Peterson finished second to Eakin in each event, giving the Miner's girls' ' team a strong one-two punch in the distance races. Bruce Buckner also knows what a shadow feels like. He put the shot 43 feet, three feet better than the former Park City High School record, but that throw did not earn him a place in the top three. "That's stiff competition," said Kahn. But the Miners enjoyed top finishes in other events. Katherine Willard won the girl's 100-meter hurdles, and Heidi Hannay captured the 400-meter run, her first ever track victory. Willard also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles. On the boy's side, Mike Richards claimed the lone victory on the strength of his performance in the mile. But the Miners recorded a number of second place finishes. Scott Tatum was second in the 110 meter hurdles, Matt Mapstone was runnerup in the 100 meter dash, and Jim Clark was second in the 400 meter run. Mark Knudson captured a pair of seconds in the long jump and high jump and Eric Fritz was second in the 3200 meter run. The Miners engaged American Fork and Wasatch on Wednesday, April 24 at American Fork. Results of ' that meet will be reported next week. |
