Show xtSSl: CEnit Cfeat ::JK:: f y by Dea Kummer So long, old friend 1886-1985-The Union Pacific railroad depot burned down in the early hours of April 21, 1985, another . old friend destroyed by fire. So many of our historic buildings are gradually disappearing. Some are still with us, but getting fewer and fewer as the new take over. , , City Hall and Territorial Jail were built in 1885. The Washington School was started in 1885 and completed in 1889 at the cost of $10,558. The Colonel Ferry home near the Spiro Tunnel was built in 1885, later became the home of Thomas Kearns. It was moved in the 1970s to its new location in Holiday Ranch, restored, and is very beautiful. The one-room school near the Ontario Mine was also built in 1885 and called Ontario School. As we look around at what is happening today, once again we see a building boom, people from all over the world coming again to Park City as they did in the 1880s to the turn of the century because of Park City's one industry. Then it was mining; today it's recreation. Does history really repeat? I do believe it does. The Summit County Daughters of Utah Pioneers will host the three-county three-county annual convention involving Morgan, Wasatch and Summit counties. The meeting will be held Saturday, April 27, at 10 a.m. in the South Summit Middle School in Kamas. There will be a business meeting. Captains will report on their county camps and a very nice program has been planned. Visitors from the state office will be there and books, pamphlets and supplies will be available. Lunch will be served at noon. Cost for lunch will be $2. All members are urged to attend. |
