Show k Sometimes the spoils x don't go to the victor I To the victor goes the spoils, or so the old saying goes. But don't try to tell that to Victor Roy. Roy, a familiar figure on the local ski racing circuit, was the apparent ViptqrtjfWdy,t Rwfeg;,,tbe &Stestb; overall time in the Coors Spalding- ' Caber Ski Race at the Park City Ski Area. But when it came for the awards, Victor watched as the grand prize a pair of Spalding skis went to a younger and slower competitor. According to Frank Elliott, head of the Park City Race Department, Skinner apparently ended up with the skis because the race rules stipulated they be awarded to the winner of the 18-30 age group. So Roy, who raced in the 31-and-over group, had to settle for a less grand prize even though he beat Skinner by .27 seconds. The results were based on a two-run total time on a giant slalom course. Elliott reported that 62 die-hards showed up in spite of Friday's frosty weather. ' ' I don' t think it got much warmer ij than zero all day," he said. "It's j hard to find the right combination of wax when it's that cold . . . Victor , , must have had the real magic." $ j Victor's magic gave him a two-run,l 1 time of 58.06 seconds. Second place v in the 31-and-over division went to k Frank Elliott, who took enough time jj out from his duties to flash down the course in 59.26 seconds. Third place in that division went to Lee Beebe, who posted a time of 61.16. ji Skinner posted a time of 58.33 to fl win the men's 18-30 class ahead of 1 Geoff Nielsen (58.47) and Jerry Jaeger (58.94).
