Itoffr, a 17-year-old member of the "H" squad on the I'nited Stales Ski Team, shocked the ski world Wednesday by winning the giant slalom gold medal at the alpine World Championships in Itormio, Italy. Itoffe, who lives in William-ston. William-ston. New York during the off season, had never finished higher than eighth place in a World Cup event before Wednesday's race. Itoffe's feat was reminiscent of last year's Olympic giant slalom when Debbie Armstrong came nut of relative obscurity to win the gold for the I'nited States. And that's not all. The American women, whose results have been less than impressive during the 19N4-83 season, took three of the top four places in Wednesday's race as Eva Tward-okens Tward-okens captured the bronze medal and Armstrong finished fourth. Preventing an American sweep was Klisabeth Kirchlerof Austria, who won the silver medal. Another American, Tamara McKinney, had the fastest time on the top of the course during the first run, but failed to negotiate a gate on the lower part of the course. |
