Show Nordic racers generate their own heat at Wasatch Mountain State Park 4 ' - : J -U- A 4 ... V?' V. by.Nartlhalat Despite Mark Eubanks dire weather forecast last Saturday turned out to be a nice dav. said nordic racer Dave Hanscmn.who is currently vying for a top spot in this year's Wasatch Citizens' Series. Although the temperature on the 7.5-kilometer track at Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway hovered near zero at the start of the race, through the rest of the morning the temperature rose steadily, Hanscom said. Because it warmed up so quickly, waxing was very-tricky, very-tricky, he said. The warming trend may have confounded some of the racers but not Per Kaarby, who is a member of the University of Utah Nordic Ski team. He led the men's open division, completing 22.5 kilometers in 80 minutes 56 seconds. His teammate Jan Tore NgaM was close behind him and finished in 81.U5. Not to be outdone, however. Park City's Junior Nordic team member Tony Chambers earned third place in the winner's circle with a time of 81.39. Sverre Planke. a student at the University of Utah, finished fourth. His time was 82.38. Ken McCarthy, who currently holds the overall season lead in the division, tried to better the unusually tough competition last Saturday but had to be content with fifth place. McCarthy's time was 83.42. Anders Prietz, also a student at the University, came in sixtli (85.00) followed by Jim Miller of White Pine Touring. Miller said the track was in excellent condition. He finished in 86.12. The women's open class also raced three laps around the 7.5-kilometfT 7.5-kilometfT loop. Marit .ind finished llinckci jHT ,ikr , si. I o.
