Both are classified as JI skiers because of their ages, but both were allowed to compete in the Nordic Valley giant slaloms because of their inexperience. "These are girls who basically were not even parallel skiers at the beginning of the season." Dicius said. "II was nice to see their development from Day One to where they are now." Barstow managed to finish 29th overall Saturday in spite of starting at the back of the pack. This week the JIIs are training tor a pair of slalom races in Kelly Cat yon. Idai i Feb w -in. Since Bret Johnson and Tyler Tebbs have been taking turns winning the Junior II (ages 14-15 . alpine ski races in the Intel-mountain Division this season, it has been easy to overlook their equally talented teammate, Jere Calmes. As a second-year JII, Calmes has spent much of the season competing : against older skiers in the "A" (ages : 19 and up) and JI (ages 16-18 1 classes. But he got the chance to : compete with his peers last weekend and made the most of it, winning one race and finishing second in the other as Nordic Valley held a pair of ; giant slaloms for the JII and JIII (ages 12-13) groups. On Saturday Calmes finished second, a mere three one-hundredths one-hundredths of a second behind Brori McCall of Ogden Valley. Then on Sunday he captured the top prize by the narrowest of margins, one hundredth of a second, over teammate Tyler Tebbs. JII Coach Ray Dicius said that Calmes was trailing Tebbs after the first run Sunday but "just uncorked one" in the second run to slip into first place. Tebbs, you may recall, was not expected to compete because of bruises received in a fall during downhill training in Sun Valley the previous week. But compete he did. Dicius said he made a mistake Saturday and finished 22nd. "But Sunday he just went out and skied as if there were no injuries." Bret Johnson finished third behind McCall and Calmes Saturday but was disqualified during Sunday's second run. Dicius said the race attracted about 150 boys and 50 girls from throughout the Intermountain Division Divi-sion (Utah, Wyoming and Idaho). "It made for a long day and tough course conditions for any boy lower than With istarting position)." To niitke inatlers worse, the skiers had to battle blowing snow and cold temperatures. Other Park City standouts in the JII boys class were Jeremy Nobis itith and 7th). Jacob Doilney (11th and 6th I and Erik Johnson iKth Saturday Dicius pointed out that Doilney does not get as much training as many of his teammates because he is still in middle school. "But he's a straight A student, so his teachers sometimes allow him to go out, then make up the work." Erik Johnson has also faced limited training because, until recently, his family lived in Salt Lake City. But Dicius said he expects their recent move to Park City to pay off. In the JIII boys' class, Dan Tebbs beat Sun Valley rival Mark Norton for the first time ever in a technical event Sunday, winning by a comfortable margin. However, Norton Nor-ton won first place in Saturday's race. Sam Urbany of Sun Valley was second in both races. Jason Parkin, whose age puts him in the JIV (ages 10-11) class, finished 10th and 14th among the JIIIs. Among the JII girls. Park City's Stephanie Palmer had a pair of second-place results, finishing behind be-hind Hilary Lindh of Romark Saturday and Rebecca Dolsot of Sun Valley Sunday. Cammy Potter, who continues to show improvement, finished third behind Palmer Saturday, but fell to 9 th Sunday after a mistake during her second run.
