For its first season the resort has opened five chair lifts. Two triple chairs on Bald Mountain give skiers access to intermediate through expert terrain while . two triples and a double chair on Bald Eagle Mountain Mount-ain allow beginner through expert terrain skiing. The "class act" starts at the parking lot where a ""4 shuttle bus awaits to take skiers to the pedestrian underpass. Once inside the main lodge, ticket windows, shops, equipment services, a cafeteria, a lounge and other services are available. Bring money or credit cards, however, because Deer Valley Val-ley doesn't intend to be your average ski resort. A full day lift pass costs $20. Stern has been active in building other resorts and at one time his Royal Street Land Company owned 25 percent of Park City Ski Corp. when retired adman Nick Badami bought Park City Ski resort, he gave the Deer Valley portion of the resort to Stern's company. Stern says he "learned the ski business by doing it" and proceeded to develop a class skiing act for people who have the money and know how to spend it. More than $20 million has been spent on the resort's opening season by the Deer Valley Resort Company. Olympic gold medalist Stein Eriksen is the director of skiing and no expense has bec.i spared to provide housing, gourmet meals, fancy restrooms and other "classy," features. Resort public relations director, Steve Dering, says the resort hasn't forgotten about the avid sportsman five beginner trails. Bald Eagle sports the current longest run of the mountain, Success, a 1.1 mile cruise that ends at the Carpenter lift. Expert skiers will probably want to opt for the Home- stake and McHenry trails starting at the top of Bald Eagle and plummeting to the bottom of the Wasatch triple chair. The Wasatch chair travels to the top of Bald Mountain where only experts and intermediates should venture. Nine expert and nine intermediate runs greet the daring with the longest run measured at an even mile. Bald Mountain also offers the Sultan triple chair geared for expert skiers on the nortwest-facing slopes. This is where the "sun don't shine too often" and where skiing is liable to be the toughest and most challenging. challeng-ing. The producer who helped mother nature create the "class act" is Edgar B. ern, Jr., president and among the frills. Dering talks about the design and snow making equipment developed develop-ed to enchance the mountains' mount-ains' natural fall lines and snow retention. He says the longest lift runs 11 minutes with verticals ranging from 1100 feet to 1400 feet on the runs. In addition, he says, "our objective is to create a situation where no lift line waits are longer than 5 minutes." One of the ways the resort hopes to accomplish accom-plish that objective is to limit the number of skiers on the hills to 3,000 per day. Skiers are being asked to reserve their place on the mountain in advance to insure a lift ticket. Resort officials say tickets will be sold without reservations but are subject to availability for that day. If you try Deer Valley and like it, resort officials are promising more next year. In addition to the continued housing developments planned plan-ned on the Deer Valley floor the resort itself hopes to add five triple chairs, one double chair, 20 runs and 70 acres of snowmaking within its first three years of operation. At the end of a twelve-year development program Deer Valley nopes to have 80 runs and 20 lifts equaling 660 acres of trails ana an increased skier capacity of 9,300 on three mountains.
