Show WWII ) in nip r.inirf UWu.aaaiiHHi Super Sunday Two Sundays ago the ticket at the Park City Ski Resort read "Sunny", and ;ertainly it was. It was my first day on the slopes (lam embarrassed to admit) in over two years, but what a day. Blue skies and white powder and a real hometown bunch. - Matt and Helen Alvarez were testing ' the slopes for the proper recommendation to their Timberhaus customers. Mike Philips and Katherine Janka were looking for future "shaftees" for KPCW's favorite gossip hour and Francie Eisenberg was taking a day off from the real news at Channel Four. Little Jason Cole was munching one of Mom's soon-to-be-sold cookies (watch for the opening of the Cookie Bear in the next two weeks at the resort center). Fred Hightower left Mid-Mountain to ski top-of-the-mountain with Park Cit Performances assistant director Demie Milliken. (No, those falls weren't staged, they were the real thing). And by late afternoon, Steve and Shay Clegg were taking in the rays on the porch on the first spring skiing day of January. It was, a super Sunday. Now, all this is not to be confused with . the REAL "Super Sunday" this Sunday. First a little test; what do Kezar stadium, the colors red and gold, and warm beer . bring to mind? It was no contest for you old faithful Forty-Niner fans was it? There are a number of displaced San Franciscans here in Park City who will be rooting for the home team come Sunday afternoon. Tailgate parties are springing up in real Golden Gate fashion all over town. Aah, those were the days. Tailgate parties in the Park were a grand tradition when old Kezar stadium was in it's prime. Women who didn't particularly particular-ly enjoy football outdid one another in lavish little brunches from the backdoor of those great suburban vehicles - the station wagon. Screwdrivers (and for a fadishly brief time Harvey Wallbangers) were de riguer, along with Bloody Marys. And never mind that alcohol was forbidden in the Park; just remember to bring the apple for the mounted patrolman's horse and you were home free. (Small personal note: my greant grandfather was one of the first mounted patrolmen in Golden Gate Park. I always felt the old Irishman would have taken the apple for his horse, too.) Well, San Francisco I understand has been on one long, two week celebration. Even the folks down in the Castro district gave up their usual drag decorum and were wearing football jerseys with their spike heels. Aah, San Francisco. So you say you didn't know whether to root for the Bumbles, Fumbles and Bangels or the Red and Gold? Look, how could a team with a quarterback whose lname is Montana noc De your favorite intermoun-tain intermoun-tain choice. And as the faithful have chanted for years: this year Niners, this year! . In other fireworks for the week, the Park City Ski Resort and KSL gave us all a fourth of July in January. If your kids were peeking out their bedroom windows Monday night around 9:30 and swearing - to you they were seeing fireworks in the sky, trust them. It was not your regular just-another-glass-of-water-and-I'll-go-to sleep ploy. The free ski night was a tremendous success and the fireworks in the snow, spectacular! Thanks for the treat... And speaking of kids and treats, suggest to your moppets that this is the week for a little extra apple polishing. National Teacher Appreciation begins January 25 and is a good time to let your teacher know you appreciate all the homework they give you. No, no. It's a good time to tell teach, gosh, thanks. Time this week, too, to break out (figuratively speaking, of course) with the Raisinettes and head to the movies. The United States Film and Video Festival comes to town Friday with more good lmovies and video than ever before. And if you lthink you spot a famous face in the produce department at Alpha Beta show 'em your Park City style; offer them your autograph (This classy move was invented by Mac MacQuiod with Hal Linden and the two - have become fast friends since.) See if this doesn't just strike a vein with the celeb you spot. Even though Steve Chin tells me Monday starts The Year of the Horse, it could perhaps be the 'This Year,' those Niners have waited for for so long. Does Gung Hoy Fat "Niners" make any sense? Have a SUPER SUNDAY. |
