Show GRACE BROOKS NOW CAUGHT WITH GOODS Salt Lake. July 28.-Grace. Brooks, considered by 1h.? police as one of the cleverest pickpockets that has ever operated In this city, was arrested by Patrolmen Pitts and McMartln this morning at 1:30 o'clock, after she had fohbed W. J. Jayne of Mercur. Utah, of C0. Fifty dollars of the money was recovered by the police and Is being held as evidence against the woman. Jayne met. the woman in front of Braonlng's chill parlor on State street, near Second South, and she told him a pitiful story or being hungry'- He offered to take her to a restaurant and purchase her a meal, but she insisted on going into the chill parlor and eating eat-ing chili. When the couple left the parlor, JaynA discovered that his mon-! mon-! ey was missing and called the patrolmen patrol-men On tho way to the police station the woman, who was walking alongside along-side her victim, attempted to hand blm $50 of the money. Patrolman Pitts, Mho was also walking near the woman, taw the movement of. her hand, and re&chlng down, led her to suppose rhat Jayne was reaching for the money, after which she handed the money to Patrolman Pitts, mistaking mis-taking bis hand for that of .Tayne's. Inasmuch as the woman has been ar-Tested ar-Tested a number of times and released releas-ed on account of lack of evidence, the deportment anticipates a conviction, having caught the woman "with the joods." |
