SPENCER, "Newspaper Man." Statement as to Responsibility. Tho statement made by a passenger passen-ger who was In the wreck at Lemay. and as quoted In the Salt Lake Tribune, Trib-une, to tho effect that because of the switch at that point being of the dwarf type, and being on the side opposite op-posite to the engineer, the latter was unablo to sec It on account of tho boiler obstructing his view. Is not given weight by local officials. It la pointed out that In the vicinity of the wreck there Is a stretch of straight trock for oer thirty miles, and that even with the switch on the opposite Hide of the engineer's seat, the light would havo been visible to him until he was within 200 feet of the switch at least The further statement of the passenger, pas-senger, W. R Dennis, that the passenger pas-senger engineer had received the proper signal from the station operator oper-ator would have no bearing on the case, as that signal only applied to the clearance of tho train, the operator oper-ator having nothing to do with the switch, and would have no knowledge of tho omission to clear tho track unless un-less he chanced to notice the switch light. |
