Appearing before tho house rules, committee today to-day to defend his official conduct in allon deportation, Louis F. Post, assistant as-sistant Hccretary of ifo labor depart- jmcnt, charged that Anthony Caminetti, commissioner-general or lmlgratlon, I had-delayed action In deportation by withholding cases so ho might compile I "an unauthorized and unlawful mem- orandam," recommending final action. i Mr. "Post declared that last March he changed the custom that had grown up in tho department of permitting permit-ting Mr. Caminetti to make recommendations recommen-dations and went dlrecl to the record to make the final decision himself. This, he- argued, wan the only legally authorized procedure. At the time of the change, Mr. Post said, "scores and scores and scores" of cases had piled up in the immigration bureau with tho result that many aliens were being neiu in Jail for months. Mr. Post testified that the secretary i of labor alone was authorized by law to Issue warrants for deportation, and that he also was the sole judge In ordering deportations. The Immigration Immigra-tion committee, he added. aGsumod throughout its report that Mr. Cami-I Cami-I nettl had power to recommend depor-I depor-I tatlons. Newspapers, ho charged, had not i correctly informed tho country of his actions, declaring that outside salaries I paid to reporters caused them to make unfair statements. j Questioned by Chairman Campbell, the assistant secretary said ho could j "not prove a single case" of reporters being influenced in their articles regarding re-garding him. ' Referring the "red" raids conducted by the department 'of justice, which have resulted in 5,0u0 arrests since last fall, tho assistant 3ooretary testified testi-fied that the only weapons found by the department agents were three revolvers, re-volvers, two of .22 caliber. Only forty of the alines who have been given a hearing, he said, testified that they favored use of violence in bringing: about a change of Government. |
