Show WORLD CRISIS . IN FOOD TDLQ Food Minister Says Britain Faces Shortage of Sugar and Wheat LONDON, May 7. Tho food minister, min-ister, Charles A. McCurdy, took up In tho house of .comm'ons yesterday the present food situation. ' He said the optimism of a year ago regarding supplies sup-plies had not beep Justified and It was well that tho fact should be realized. The world production of sugar had decreased 3,500,000 tons. Great Britain Brit-ain should receive In the coming year 4,000,000 tons less of wheat from America Am-erica than during the present year, and Tndla's Increase of 1,500.000 tons would not be available for export. WTicat prices were a most Important factor In determining wages all over tho world. Tho nations were faced with the prospect of a considerable reduction in the world's available supply of wheat and he feared In the absence of wise and prudent statesmanship on tho part -of Importing countries that there would be a rise in prices reflected In every other commodity. The supply of butter promised to be only half the pre-war standard, and he could see no sign that the wor!dks food shortage was likely materially ma-terially to improve. England must still continue to get tho greater part of its imported food from America, but he hoped that by the end of the year alternative sources might be available. on |
