Show International Protestant League Disapproves of Plea for Prisoners PITTSBURGH, Pa.. May 7. The ntcrnatlonal Protestant league through Its headquarters here, last night expressed opposition to the action ac-tion of the "Eighty-eight Irish-American congressmen" who yesterday sent a protest to British government officials offi-cials against the holding of Irish prisoners pris-oners without trial. The subject of the support given to the "Irish republic" repub-lic" by somo persons in the United States came up in the house of commons com-mons today, Horatio Bottomley asked whether tho government was aware that appeals for subscriptions for bonds addressed by de Yalera as "president of tho Irish republic," were still appearing In American newspapers newspa-pers and were supported by the governors gov-ernors of various states, and whether Great Britain proposed to make representations repre-sentations on the matter to President Wilson. Mr. Bonar Law, replying in behalf of the government, said it was understood under-stood that such appeals were still appearing ap-pearing in certain American papers, but he was not In a position to say whether they were supported by any governor. Great Britain, he added, was not prepared pre-pared to mako representations. Would Refuse Geddes WASHINGTON, May 7. A resolution resolu-tion proposing that congress suggest to President Wilson that ho refuse to receive Sir Auckland Geddes, new British ambassador, as Ireland's diplomatic dip-lomatic representative but receive instead in-stead Dr. Patrick McCarton as minister minis-ter of the provisional Irish republic, was introduced today by Representative Representa-tive Hammlll, New Jersey. Two hundred laborers forced an entry into the council chamber today, to-day, whero a discussion was In progress pro-gress on the question of road repairing repair-ing contracts, and demanded that direct di-rect instead of contract labor be used.
