Show I What They Say 1 , 1 : ft M LLL. SUZANNE LENGLEN Mile. Suzanne Lenglen, woman tennis ten-nis champion of Europe, says that if girlg would learn to "volley" tennis: would not be a dull game for them. She advises girls to learn one stroke at a time. Mile. Lenglen says: "My favorite pluce is at the net, and I get therG on the first chance. Tennis 1 would seldom be dull if girls learned to volley. From first to last my father fath-er has been my only coach. "There Is only one stroke I ever con- scienuousiy trica to copy, ana mat is the forehand drive of tho great Mr.' Wilding. I take this strohe as high as1 possible so as to avoid any curve on the ball. I do not attempt to put top spin on the ball. I am also careful to keep well away from the ball and play the stroke without bending my arm. Balance of the body is most important. im-portant. Without perfect balance it is impossible to execute strokes well. 1 pay great attention to this. I advise all girls to take one stroke at a time, as '1 did, and practice It diligently." GEORGE HUFF As college baseball goes the University Uni-versity of Illinois team ranks with the leaders, according to George Huff, 1 veteran Illini athletic director. The mark set by Illinois in graduating such stars as Beebe, Falkenberg, Pfeffor, Lundgren and Stahl has given the school a hard tradition to live up to. Huff says it is harder to get a base-' base-' ball squad together now than it was when he first came to Illinois. 1 "When I first came here we had 2000 students. Now there are about 8000, 'but it is harder to find a base-jball base-jball team among the throng of today ithan it was then. The reason seems to ue that the high schools aren t playing play-ing as they once did. We could pick a fine team from 20 applicants in those days, when it is hard to find aj half dozen good men out of a hundred now. However, as the present class goes I think the Illinois team of the present has as good a chance as any players here this spring that 1 imagine will go to the majors and cut much of a figure, such as some of my boys have done in former years. There are three of my pupils coaching in the 'Big Ten' conference now Potsy Clark here with me at Urbana, Lundgren Lund-gren at Michigan and Ashmore at Iowa. Somehow 1 just seem to think they arq going to have the three top ones in the race this year." |
