Show IV ER ni fl L DLBERTSOI HAS LEGS RILL 'OF SHOT Charles Handley, local contractor, who shot Vernal Albertson, 12 years oC age, with a shotgun, Saturday afternoon, after-noon, when the boy is alleged to have stolen apples, was released from custody cus-tody of the sheriff today. No complaint has been filed against Handley and whatever action is to bo taken will be held in abeyance pending the outcome of the wounds in the boy's' legs. Dr. W. R. Emmett, who has been at-tending at-tending the youngster, said that the shot in the legs would not be removed until the swelling had been reduced. Both legs from the angles to above" tbo knees were almost peppered with the shot from the shotgun. He said he had not counted the number of shot In the little fellow's leg but was of the opinion opin-ion there was almost the full contents of the shell. Deputy Sheriff George Goodmanson, who placed Handley under arrest, in speaking of the shooting, said: "Saturday afternoon I was at the Horse sales yards when 1 heard the shot fired. Henry C. Gwilliam ran out the front and toward the Handley fllace next door west. At the gate, about ten feet in from the county highway, I found the boy crying with, pain. I turned him over to Gwilliam and 'asked him to rush the boy to the sheriff's office while I tried to find the man that had shot him. "A man nearby came toward me and I asked him if he shot the boy. He said he did not but thought the shot came from Handley's yard. I turned and looked toward the yard and saw some weeds move. I went toward the spot and saw a man looking over the top of the weeds. I commanded him 10 come out and Handley appeared. 1 asked it he shot the boy and he said he did. When I asked whether he used a shotgun or rifle, ho replied that it was a shotgun. He said ho had the gup hidden in some weeds. He produced it and when I opened it and saw the shells gone, ho explained that he had thrown the shells away. "Later, Handley said that he had b.ecn 'laying for" the boys because they had stolen his apples. He said the boys stole cherries from the. orchard early this summer and had broken down the trees." Deputy Sheriff Robert Burk, who made an investigation of the premises, stated that the appearance of the ground near where the boy fell did not show any signs of the full force of the load entering the ground. |
