COLLEGE According to Information received at the University of Utah nnd nt the Utah Agricultural College, a plan has been adopted at the meeting of university uni-versity and collego presidents now In session at Presidio, California, whereby where-by students above the age of 18 years who enroll or are inducted Into the students' army training corps, will receive re-ceive the pay and full status of a private pri-vate in the army, which is $30 per month. At tho University of Utah, students who have completed a high school course or who are pursuing college work will be permitted to enroll. At the state agricultural collego the same ararngements have been made for all boys oyer 18 years, though they have not completed a high school course. In this case two general military classes class-es will be formed, It is stated; one for students not registered for collese work, and one for the high school students. stu-dents. The students will be given military training, which will prepare them for some kind of advanced standing in the army or navy. The work will be governed by a regular army- officer, and the students will be provided with uniforms and all equipment, free of charge. At a later date, the message states, students will be provided with free lodging and board. College officials state that such an exceptional educational opportunity is unparalleled in history- The students are to be paid for attending school, and, if they qualify, will be given commissions com-missions in tho various branches of tho service. One purpose of the plan, it is stated, is to avoid the falling off of attendance attend-ance at the schools and to provide trained men for after the war. The plan provides that, upon the recom-imendation recom-imendation of tho president of the college, col-lege, students will be permitted to continue their education Indefinitely. Officials of the "Utah Agricultural college state that regular appointments appoint-ments will be made from this service to the central officers training camp as the students aro qualified and as the students are qualified and as they become of age. |
