Show Front Extends Northward. WITH THE BRITISH FORCES IN FRANCE. Aug. 26 (11:30 a. m.) The battle this morning again extended extend-ed the activo front northward, fresh British forces launching a new attack from the river Scarpe to a sector which had heretofore been tho left bank of the battle line. Everywhere the British line is reported to have ad-1 vanced. I Last night the Germans counter-at-l tacked north of the river Scarpe and got back a slight portion of ground j captured by tho British yesterday. In the south below the Scarpe .he British continued to push forward last night and today. A vigorous counterattack counter-attack on Eaucourt L'Abbaye was repulsed re-pulsed with heavy losses for tho enemy. LONDON, Aug. 26. British troops attacked this morning in the Scarpe sector cast of Arras and good progress is being made, according to the official offi-cial statement issued at the war office of-fice today. The British position southeast of Mory and west 6f Crolsllfos has been l improved in spite of a heavy rain I which is falling on the battlefield, the statement says. Favreuil, a mile and a half north-J north-J east of Bapaume. has been captured j and the British have advanced be-J be-J yond the village the statement says, j The British lines have been advanced ad-vanced slightly astride the Somme an I progress has been made in the direction direc-tion of Maricourt. four miles north -cast of Bray, the statement says. The text of the British statement roads: "At 3 o'clock this morning our troops attacked in the Scarpe sector and are reported to have made good progress. "On the southern portion of the battue bat-tue front we have advanced our line slightly nStride the Somrao and by a successful operation carried out yesterday yes-terday afternoon, have made progress in the direction of Maricourt. "Yesterday evening the enemy launched strong counter-attacks south and north of Bapaume in the neighborhood neigh-borhood of Eucourt L'Abbaye and Favreuil. Fav-reuil. In both localities the attacks were repulsed. North of Favreuil our troops met the enemy with the bayonet, bay-onet, inflicting heavy casualties on him and taking prisoners.
