Congressman Welling of Utah is in (he battle zone of Europe- In a letter to a friend, Just before he left to cross the ocean, he staled his object in going, go-ing, as follows: "I cannot escape the thought that I owe it as a duty to myself and our boys who are 'over there lo make this Irip. We have voted billions of dollars dol-lars for the prosecution of tho war. This money is being spent, largely, In France for docks, wharves, railroads, aviation fields, hospitals and n thousand thou-sand other items which go to supply our rapidly expanding expedition. I want lo see this work. 1 want to know the conditions under which our boys live and fight, I would like to meet tho boys themselves in the trdnches, and, by personal contact with the hardships which they endure, bring back hero to my work a first-hand knowledge of the heroic service 'they are giving to mankind. "The imperishable fame or American Ameri-can arms is just now being demonstrated demon-strated as never before to tho whole world. I should like to learn how those at homo can best help out In the fight, and encourage those abroad who are doing this wonderful work for the freedom of mankind." A day last week, our congressman was rcporled as seeing London by airplane. air-plane. If he keeps up his inquisitive daring, there may be a vacancy in this congressional district. But the purpose of his journey is good. Our national legislators, if bel-jter bel-jter informed on war'g necessities might lessen thoir nagging at tho men ! who are doing things on a great scale. We are pleased to say that Reproach-1 tative Welling has not been one of the obstructionists. |
