Show I THE DISTANCE TO BERLIN. Frequently the question Is asked: . How near to Berlin are the allied forces? They are not near Berlin. The allies, al-lies, at the closest point, are 400 miles distant. The idea seems to prevail that the approach of peace depends on reaching reach-ing Berlin, which is wrong. Long heforc Berlin conies under the guns of the Americans, Germany will be writhing in agony. When the storm of shot and shell bursts over the homes of Germany and tho landscape is scarfed with the furrows of war. the agony of death will be upon the people of that land, i and peace will be the one cry from out the vortex of destruction. But lamentations lamen-tations will not stop the victorioul armies. Unconditional surrender will be exacted. Those terms will be agreed to when the SUirs and Stripes are floating over Bingen on the Rhine. and dividing tho world among the sons 6t tho kaiser; today a wail Is heard from Berlin to Cologne. No longer do the German papers talk of victory. They now are assuring assur-ing their readers that Germany Is capable ca-pable of a strong defense, which will keep out the allies, if the people at homo do not weaken. During all this squirming and worry, what has happened to tho emperor's special correspondent who, when Inst heard from, was down on the Marne? He should give us an expression from the kaiser, or at least tell us whether "me un Gott" still has faith In Gott. There has not been a rattlo out of the Kaiser's sword in the past sixty j days. i |
