Show CKKN IN SIGHT IN m In view of the facts that enlistments in the National Guard of Utah since the governor's call for volunteers have been less than 100 men, more than 400 men are needed to bring the guard to present Avar footing and 3,500 will be required if the guard Is called into the federal service, the state officials are getting the machinery for drafting men into the guard In rendlness for operation. Under the stale law the call for voluntary vol-untary enlistments in the guard must run for a period of thirty days, and this period will end April 25. Then, if there is not the number of enlistments required to bring the guard up to war footing, tho drafting machinery of the state military law will be put Into operation, op-eration, it is announced. A checking of the records of the total enlistments since the bieaking off of diplomatic relations shows that in the guaru there have been ninety enlistments for the entire btate, and forty-three of theso were enlisted at the local recruiting station. Three hundred and ten men are needed to fill the guard to the strength called for under the governor's proclamation. Tho total number of recruits for the navy from this district has been 194. with a total of fifty-six yesterday. The total number for the army is 158, with a' total of eighteen yesterday. Ready for Conscription. Least interest of all has been manifested mani-fested in the guard of the state, nnd it is for this reason that the officials of the state are making ready to use the conscription provision of the state military law to fill up the guard as soon as the thirty-day period for voluu- tnrv fmlislmrmts hn rnmfrl Recently Governor Bamberger has been swamped with letters from citizens cit-izens offering their services to the government and the state, but in most cases they want to bo officers. Yesterday tho governor sent out a circular reply to all these informing them that the way to tender their services ser-vices to the state and nation is by applying ap-plying at the national guard recruiting stations and enlisting in the guard "Numerous persons are offering their services as officers or making application by letter for recommendations recommenda-tions for such appointments," said the governor, "and a majority of the persons per-sons are wholly without previous military mil-itary experience and totally unqualified unquali-fied to fill the places which they seek. The policy of this department will be to fill vacancies in the commissioned personnel of whatever forces are called for through appointment of men serving in the ranks who are qualified quali-fied for such positions and who have shown through their service in the ranks their willingness to be of use to the state and nation even at the minor positions." nn |
