Show uu GENERAL WOOD FAVORS ATHLETICS NEW YORK. April 9 Wide difference differ-ence of opinion developed yesterday as to whether amateur or intercollegiate athletics should bo dropped to make room for military training. United States military authorities, however, feel that calling off athletic events is not practical patriotism. In a letter to Major M. P. Pickering, graduate manager of athletes at Pennsylvania, Penn-sylvania, Major General Leonard Wood said athletics was the best training for future soldiers and advises against cancelling any schedules. This view was upheld by the athletic directors at West Point and Annapolis. At both tho military and naval academy acad-emy it was announced that tho program pro-gram of athletic evonts would bo run off Just as nearly as possible as already al-ready drawn up. The Pough keeps ie regatta also was canceled by the action of the Intercollegiate Inter-collegiate Rowing nssoclntion. |
