Show . CURE OF BRAKES v.. ON YOUR CI j ! - ' The brakes of most cars are equal-! equal-! lzed," at least to a certain extent, that ! Is, there is an arrangement in the I j . operating linkage which prevents one ! brake of a pair from acting more powerfully pow-erfully than the' other. No equaliz- N Ing arrangement can, however, com- pensate for extreme differences in ad- Justment of the two brakes of a pair ' nnd it is of considerable importance I I that the owner should assure himself J that one brake of a set is not doing practically all the braking. This is i because a car which is braked on one i" wheel only is especially likely to skid jl dangerously and also because the tiro upon the wheel which does all the braking is worn out much more rapid-j rapid-j j ly than that upon the other wheel, fj It is a good idea, when ipdividual j j brake rods have been adjusted and indeed occasionally if no adjustments have been made, to jack up both rear wheels and to set one pair of brakes until one or the other of the wheels cannot readily be turned by hand. If the other wheel can still be turned freely, even though the brakes are still further set, it is a pretty sure sign that one brake of the pair is doing do-ing the "lion's share" of the braking and probably wearing out the tread of the tire on its wheel at an excessive rate. The same test should be performed per-formed with the other set" of brakes and the individual pull-rods adjusted until both wheels are nearly equally held when the pedal or lever is operated. op-erated. A brake is said to "drag" when its band never ceases to make forcible contact with its drum, although its leper or pedal is in its fully released position. Dragging brakes increase fuel consumption, decrease speed and j hill climbing ability and wear out 1 their linings premuteurly. If one or both of the brake-drums of a car arc found to be hot, when the car has been running on level roads for some time with no strong or continued I brake application!, it is a pretty sure sign that the brakes drag. |
