Show ! REPUBLICANS TRAPPED IN SMTUIE I Realizing that it is impossible to overcome the enormous vote for Presi-dent Presi-dent Wilson, but stilL hoping to make V it a half-way victory for their ticket, .; the Republican campaign managers V have been trapped in the meshes of 1 their own scheme to tie the hands of the president with a Republican con- greBs. i Over tho signature of Harry Hales, l Republican county clerk and custodian of the voting machines, there has ap- peareel an advertisement containing it these paragraphs: "Many voters have made inquiries i of my office as to whether or not a ' voter can cast his ballot on the ma-I ma-I chine for Wilson electors and the bal- ance of the Republican ticket by pull-' pull-' ing the Republican lever and, vice versa, I, therefore, make this state- ment to tho voters: ' "Any voter can, by pulling the Re- f publican lever, lifting up the pointer I over the Hughes electors and pulling I 'own the pointers over the Wilson J Qr, vote for the Wilson electors and the balance of the Republican ticket. Likewise any voter can, by pulling the Democratic lever, lifting up the pointers over the Wilson dec-tors dec-tors and pulling down the pointers over the Hughes electors, vote for the Hughes electors and the balance of the Democratic ticket." What About Other National Candidates? Voters, do you see any mention of the Democratic candidates for senator or congressman, or anyniention of the Republican candidates for the same offices? Do you notice that Mr. Hale3 in his opening paragraph refers to the "Wilson electors" and repeats the suggestion in the next paragraph by referring first to "the balance of the Republican ticket?" You do not need a field to get his viewpoint. But If you are not convinced con-vinced as to this voting machine trick planned by the Republicans, ask some Republican demonstrator in charge of a voting machine how to scratch a Republican ticket for President Wil- son. Tou will be shown how to pull the Republican party lever, lift up the four pointers over the Hughes presidential presi-dential electors and pull down the four points over the Wilson electors. TAKE PARTICULAR NOTICE, HOW-EVER, HOW-EVER, THAT THERE WILL BE NO MENTION OF THE POINTERS INDl-CAING INDl-CAING A VOTE ON UNITED STATES SENATOR OR CONGRESSMAN. CONGRESS-MAN. You will have cast your vote for President Wilson, but you will also have assisted the Republicans in tying the hands of the president by helping to elect a Republican senator and a Republican congressman, It would be almost as futile to re-elect President Wilson with a Republican majority in congress as to elect Charles E. Hughes. Votets, Don't Be Fooled. Voters especially those of you who expect to support President Wilson do not be fooled by this trick, even though the "custodian of voting machines" ma-chines" tells you it can be done. The Democrats and Socialists joined in a protest against the use of voting machines ma-chines in this election, but the Republicans Re-publicans insisted that the machines be used. THERE WAS METHOD IN THEIR PLAN AND MR. HALES HAS VERY KINDLY MADE THE METH. OD PLAIN. Inasmuch as the machines will be used in spite of the combined protest of the Democrats and Socialists there is only one SAFETY FIRST plan in voting for President Wilson and a Democratic congress. PULL THE SECOND PARTY LEVER LEV-ER BEARING THE ROOSTER EMBLEM EM-BLEM AND VOTE IT STRAIGHT FOR WOODROW WILSON. AFTER THE WAR, THEN WHAT? When all Europe was at peace and expending her mighty energies to manufacture products for the world's markets the United States were able to hold their own and had their share of the world's trade. In the past two and one-half years the European nations na-tions have slaughtered several millions mil-lions of their best artisans and mechanics me-chanics and have maimed and wounded wound-ed several millions more. Rut In Ihn fapfi nf thoso f.infe lhf Republican calamity howlers predict that when peace comes to all the European Eu-ropean nations their dead men and cripples will be able to do so much more than able-bodied nations over did America will be flooded with foreign-made foreign-made goods and our own mills will be put out of business. Do you believe such tommyrot? And yet this is a fair sample of Republican campaign logic, if you want to knock that word. IS MORRIS FAIR. At a meeting held in the Salt Lake theater on the evening of October 30, 191G, Mr. Nephi L. Morris, Republican Republi-can candidate for governor, was asked by the Transportation Brotherhood's Publicity and Legislative Bureau of Utah the following question: "Do you or do you not support or indorse the public utterances of the Republican Presidential Candidate, Mr. Hughes, wherein he denounces the enactment of the Adamson Eight-hour Eight-hour Law?" Mr. Morris absolutely refused to answer an-swer the question. HE HAD A REASON. REA-SON. The Ellas Morris Company and the Utah Cement Pipe Company, of which Nephi L. Morris, Republican nominee for governor, is reported to be president, presi-dent, have so far failed to sign a contract with tho teamsters. He has a truck driver whom he pays ?2.50 a day, when the teamsters' scale for truck driving is not less than $3.00. REPUBLICANS WANT A CHANGE. A prominent life-long Republican volunteered to tell us yesterday that he hoped the state and county administrations admin-istrations would be changed, that the Republicans had ben in office ho long that tho public service had become inefficient and corrupt, and that he hoped to see the entire Democratic ticket national, state and county elected. It would mean a cleaning out of Incompetents and a starting up again on a clean basis. And there are thousands of others who are think, ing the same way and will vote accordingly. ac-cordingly. , J |
