Show FEAR-PRODUCING SHELLS IN WAR Paris, March 31, 11:05 p. m. The Germans, in a fierce attack on French positions northeast of Hill 295, in the Le Mort Homme roglon, some three miles east of Malancourt, gained a ; footing in some of the French first line trenches, but were immediately driven out itf a vigorous counter-attack, according to the French official communication Issued this evening. The Germans have made no attempt to debouch from Malancourt, which they hold. The official communication says' "To the south of the Somrne the enemy, after artillery preparation, attempted at-tempted a series of attacks in force against our small command in the region of Dompierre. All their attempts at-tempts failed. "In Champagne our destructive fires shattered German trenches to the south of Sainto Marie-a-Py. A German aeroplane, which was struck by our special guns, fell into flames within the enemy's lines to the north of Tahure. "In the Argonne our artillery shelled shell-ed troops on the march in the direction direc-tion of Varennes. "To tho west of the Muese the activity ac-tivity of the artillery has slackened. In the region of Malancourt the enemy en-emy made no attempt during the day to debouch from the village. "In the region of Le Mort Homme, after a violent bombardment the en-emy en-emy toward 6 o'clock in the evening started against our positions to the northeast of Cote 295 a strong attack, at-tack, accompanied with a barrier of lacrlmosal shells. The Germans succeeded suc-ceeded for a moment in getting a footing foot-ing in somo elements of our first lines, but were driven out through a vigorous counter-attack, directed a little lit-tle later to the west of the same position, posi-tion, failed completely. "To the east of the Mouse and In the Woovre there has been moderate artillery activity. "In the forest of Apremont we have bombarded enemy cantonments nt Varvlnay. Our fire against a German battery in action caused several caissons cais-sons to explode.
