ChandoB, an early English settler in America, tries to buy from Chief Duskara, of the Wlconlcoes, a thousand thou-sand aoreB of land known as "The Valley of Shadow," which have been given by grant to the Indian chief. Duskara refuBeB to sell "The Valley of Shadow" and hides the grant thereto there-to In the hollow of a tree. Chandos and hlB son murder Duckara, and the settler forges the chief's name to a deed transferring the property to the Chandos family. The dying squaw of Duskara utters a curse against the Chandos family and all its Issue, on whom she aeeks to Invoke blindness. Generations come and go. Hester Gray, a girl In her teens, is the descendant de-scendant of the early settler, and the heir to "The Valley of Shadow." Lee Duskara, a student at Harvard, Is the great-great-tgrandson of tho Indian In-dian chief. He3ter and Lee are thrown much together and fall in love. Leo asks Colonel Ernest Dent, Hester's guardian, for permission to marry the lattcr's ward. Dent, who was a friend of Hester's father, has become embroiled with Juliet Cordova (Theda Bara), a Mexican Mex-ican adventuross who Is serving as Ids secretary. Juliet's power over Dent Is absolute. He consults her on even the most trivial of subjects. When Juliet learns that Lee desires to marry Hester, she takes steps to prevent tho marriage. Simulating the utmost Innocence, she compromises Lee, and the latter Is rejected by Hester. Leo Is in the woods when he stumbles stum-bles on the land grant hidden over a century before by Chief Duskara. Ho takes the grant to a lawyer and btgins proceedings to establish his title to "The Valley of Shadow." -Juliet goes on living In the home of Dent and Hester without the blind wife suspecting anything of her true character. Finally Hester discovers tho dual life that Dent has been leading. She is groping her way through her husband's study when she comes upon Juliet and Dent, asleep, locked in each other's arms In a large chair. Hester runs from the house with the purpose of committing suicide. Lee prevents her from carrying out the purpose and takes her to an orphanage or-phanage where she has been a frequent fre-quent visitor. Dent dies, a victim of his own self-indulgence. Lee'B title to "The Valley of Shadow" established, establish-ed, he goes to the orphanage, again declares his love for Hester, and this time is accepted.
