Show CREEPING UP ON VERDUN. While the Germans continue to creeKLforward at Verdun, thev are dangerous. Every day for a week past, they have made progress. Their advances have been small, but the very fact they are able to go forward, indicates they hold a mastery over the French. They have not been completely checked, and, until they are, the allies must face a serious condition. Verdun In Itself is not so Important, Import-ant, but the capture of that position would have a tremendouB moral effect ef-fect The Iobb would be disheartening dishearten-ing to the French and most encouraging encourag-ing to the Germans. It would demonstrate demon-strate that the Teutons have the power pow-er to break through at any point they attack. Undoubtedly the French have rallied ral-lied their most powerful battalions at Verdun and are resisting with all the strength at their command, for they realize that to deny the Germans the capture of the fortress would have as great an adverse Influence on the central powers as the taking of the place would be discouraging to the allies. We view Verdun aB a supreme test of the relative powor of the two armies, |
