Show RACES TO BE HELD 0N COAST Grand Prize and Vanderbilt Cup Events to Be Run at Santa Monica. New York, N. Y., Jan. 7. For the first time in the history of American automobile racing the grand prize and Vanderbilt cup events will be held t his year weBt of the Mississippi river. riv-er. The two major motor contests were awarded to Loa Angeles today by the Motor Cups Holding association. associa-tion. The races will bo run on tho famous Santa Monica track on February Feb-ruary 21 and 23, the grand prize on the latter date. Announcement of the conclusion ot negotiations for the staging of the races in California was made tonight by Leon T. Shettler, vice president o! tho Western Automobile association, which will conduct the events. Mr Shettler had beon In touch for sla weeks with W. K. Vanderbilt, Jr.. Harry Payne Whitney and others identified with national and interna tionnl racing. The formal agreement was reached between Mr Shettler and Henry B. Anderson, president ot the Automobile club of America, and representative of the Motor Cupa Holding association. The Automobile Club of America has sanctioned the grand prize race for Lob Angeles and Mr. Shettler said he had been assured that the Amen can Automobile assoelatlon would sanction the Vanderbilt cup event. Savannah, Milwaukee and the Long Island motor parkway officials did not bid for the races. it is under stood that the Western Automobile association was the only organization which sought actively for the privilege privi-lege of running the events. Accord lng to Mr. Shettler. who has been in communication with automobile makers, a list of entrants for the x- an derbilt cup event larger than for any previous national race has been assured, as-sured, while a large entry list in the international grand prize contest also is certain. |
