That la th Judgment of a New York judge who laks issue is-sue with the excuse that the criminal ha been produced because "the poor boy never had a chance" One of our exchanges says that this vipw coincides with the opinion of social workers who have found that juvenile criminals, and older ones, of the ranks of the middle and upper claases. The "poor" boy and girl, as a rule, are too busy earning a living liv-ing to have time for criminal pursuits. pur-suits. They are too poor in actuality to Indulge In those pastimes which are the open door to vice There is the additional fact that in every large city there arc a number of agencies whose mission it is to look after th-) poorer claases and see that their poverty pov-erty does not deprive them of the proper social and moral training. In New York alone there are 3500 of these societies. So it appears thai the poor are better chaperoned than those who are not. The plain truth I Is that neglect of parents or their foolish pride are responsible for more boys and girls going wrong than any-other any-other cause or combination of causes Too many children are raised In idleness, idle-ness, permitted to be selfish, wilful and disobedient and encouraged in aping the vices and frivolities of those who spend their wealth in riotous living liv-ing It's the boy or girl who has too many chances and neglects all ot them, that usually goes wrong. |
