OCR Text germany bids for worlds monopoly of wireless telegraphy london aug 12 germany la making a bold bid for the control of wireless telegraphy throughout the world whereby a dangerous blow would her struck at vital interests of the british empire this is the real meaning of the strenuous efforts now being made by a powerful syndicate ot german capitalists to purchase the conti oiling financial interest in the marconi wireless telegraphy company as well as in all the dependent founded and controlled by the parent marconi concern the capture 0 the world liae marconi organization by the germans would inevitably result in disastrous consequences from the point of view of imperial defense the possession of the controlling financial interest in the marconi companies would mean the successful conclusion of a lone and persistent german campaign to wrest from great britain our predominance in wireless telegraphy and to obtain for herself all the far reach log advantages which this nanco confers the marconi company which Is a british concern has built up by the efforts 0 many years a world alde system of communication by wireless telegraphy the british government the italian government and lloyds shipping agency are at present all bound by contract to use exclusively the marconi system tho marconi apparatus haa been fitted on steamships belonging to various companies the company possesses twenty two wireless telegraphy stations in england twenty in italy nineteen in canada seven in the united states two in egypt ona in holland and one in montenegro making a total of seventy two stations on blayd this number does not include tho numerous stations on land erected for lloyds shipping agency the strategic importance of these stations is incalculable the marconi company to preserve its own predominance refuses to allow these stations to communicate with other stations whore any rival system of wireless telegraphy ts llred this la disastrous to the i man system of wireless telegraphy i known as owned by the german wireless telegraphy company A ship fitted with a apparatus cannot communicate with any ship fitted with the marconi apparatus or with any station on land worked by the marconi company ships fitted with the system are thus cut off from communication with the stations of lloyds agency as well as from nearly all the land stations in the world for this reason even the ships of the great german companies are equipped not with the system but with the marconi apparatus germany prec elving that the system was overshadowed br the superior enterprise of the marconi company proposed to readjust matters by summoning other countries to her aid an international conference was in consequence summoned and met in berlin last october strangely enough the british government instead of energetically defending the rights of the british company and thereby national interests gave way to germany on almost every essential point an international convention compelling compulsory inter alon between all wireless telegraphy stations was drawn up with the consent of the british delegation the terms of this convention which will come into force next year compel the marconi stations all over the world to accept and transmit messages from and other rival foreign systems the convention thus arbitrarily deprives the british company of the predominance which it has gained and confers immense benefits on foreign competitors in the realm of wireless telegraphy
