OCR Text POWER the power ol 01 water issuing from a monitor lg enormous and many men have been killed by the mighty forca of a stream employed in cutting down auriferous deposits in the california gold camps where waa first employ on an extensive scale monitors says mines and minerals now and then become uncontrollable and do great damage but improvements have been made in handling them so as to render them comparatively safe the effect of a monitor running away can be appreciated from the experience of firemen where with comparatively small hose and under small head considerable damage can be done it a inch nozzle doea this damage the effect of an 8 inch or 10 inch nozzle and with water under a much higher head can readily be appreciated the method of control in turning the monitor easily in any desired ig said to have been discovered lo 10 a peculiar way A man wanted to clean his shovel so he placed it the water column as it issued from tho monitor anda was surprised to eee the monitor suddenly mave the foreman who had been watching the operation then rigged up a contrivance which has been subsequently called a deflector which Is a ring around the nozzle and which can bo readily moved to allow the current of water to be projected against it the pressure from the little finger on the deflector Is chent to turn the monitor around ats the latter works in a ball and socket joint the introduction 0 the deflector has undoubtedly saved many lives and greatly facilitated operations what promises to be one of the greatest improvements which has been made in hydraulic mining in the past few years is a device tor operating and turning the monitor from a distance the nearer the monitor can be placed to tho bank the more effective will bo the impact of the stream the great danger ot operation has been that where the bank Is high there 13 apt to be a tall ot rock and dirt upon the men handling the monitor an attempt to solve this has been made by the manager ot the lagrange mine in california by the use of magnets to move the deflector controlled by means of electric wires leading to the magnets of tho monitor thus enabling the latter to be placed very close to the bank and operated from a distance greatly in creasing its efficiency without endangering dan gering the lives of the operators this has been tried only on a small scale as yet but it is thought it can be made practical for large monitors
